Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005). Known as "Fighting Shirley," she was the first African-American woman elected to Congress, serving the first of seven terms beginning in 1969. She was also the first woman and first African-American to seek the nomination for president from one of the two major political parties, the Democrats, in 1972.
